1. EMBRIOLOGIA I DESENVOLUPAMENT DELS METAZOUS. Organismes diblàstics vs triblàstics. Gastrulació i origen dels teixits: ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm. Estadis del desenvolupament embrionari en mamífers: pre-embrionari, embrionari (organogènesis) i fetal (creixement) // EMBRIOLOGY AND DEVELOPMENT OF METAZOANS. Diblastic vs triblastic organisms. Gastrulation and origin of tissues: ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm. Stages of embryo development in mammals: pre-embryonic, embryonic (organogenesis) and foetal (growth).
// COMPARED ORGANOGRAPHY. Classification of tissues. Simmetry plans. Histological comparison among major body systems, with emphasis on the human model: cardiovascular, lymphatic, endocrine, digestive, respiratory, excretory, nervous, skeletal.
Criteria for the evaluation of the student:
-A final test (70% value from the total of the course) and a group assignment (30% value from the total).
-The final test will focus on topics studied in class and during the practical work. The practical part of the test will consist of the identification of histological images.
-The group assignment (30%) will consist of the development of a scientific paper in English on the histology of an organ to choose between humans and other animal species.
-The presentation of the paper, both written and orally, weights the 15% of the final mark for the group assignment, and the adequacy of the content accounts for the remaining 15%.
-The subject is considered passed when the final mark obtained is equal to or greater than 5 over 10. A student at the recovery exam can only get the MINIMUM MARK FOR PASSING THE COURSE (5).
Attendance to the practical sessions and to the final exam as well as submission of the group assignment are mandatory to pass the course. If these requirements are not followed the student will get the final qualification of NOT PRESENTED.
The organography is the description of the organs in relation to their function in living things. The course is especially interesting for students who wish to deepen into histological and embryologic concepts. It aims to strengthen the understanding of animal histology so that students may recognize many concepts already seen in the animal physiology subject and will be able to devote more time on improving their skills on the interpretation and comparison of micrographs. The schedule of the subject limits the inclusion of different animal models and therefore it mainly addresses the human histology. However, there is special mention to other animal species, always following a phylogenetic point of view in order to understand the structure of the different organs.
In relation to the practical work, the student is challenged to identify an organ macroscopically and microscopically and to prepare a full scientific paper in English on his/her observations. The dedication of time required (1/3 of the total of the subject) demands a medium-high level of English. The research is presented orally and the way of exposing is free, being either structured as a scientific presentation or for teaching purposes.
