The initiative, a pioneer in the Girona regions, promotes the communal life of university students with people with Down Syndrome and/or intellectual disability to facilitate their independence.
The Friendly Flat of the Montilivi Campus university housing, is a flat of learning that serves so that two persons who come from the Astrid 21 Foundation experience at first hand what it means to emancipate from the family home, sharing a flat with two students of the University of Girona.
This experience will serve as a bridge for their emancipation, so that each young person ends up deciding how they want to live in the immediate future: with family, friends, with a partner or alone. For three months, they will share flat with two university students, always receiving the necessary support on the part of the professionals of the Foundation.
The project aims for the inclusion of the persons with disability in society, intending to break the cliché that the persons with intellectual disability cannot live alone or cannot live with persons who do not have a disability. For the university students it is also a unique life experience, supporting their flatmates, sharing the tasks of the home, establishing routines together and mutually helping.
