University Education Programme for people over the age of 50

Regulations

AGREEMENT BY WHICH THE ADMISSION AND ENROLMENT REGULATIONS ARE APPROVED FOR PARTICIPANTS IN THE UdG’s UNIVERSITY EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR THE OVER-50s

(approved at Governing Council nº. 10/09 of 17 December 2009)
Reason: Given the creation of the UdG’s university education program for the over-50s, approved by the Teaching Commission of the UdG in session 01/07, of 7 February, where it was proposed to offer people over 50 years of age the chance to study at university on some education pathways related to different specialisations of the UdG’s Faculties and Schools. Given that the goal of this initiative is to provide the over-50s with a space for knowledge, reflection and intergenerational dialogue which, unlike the regulated courses of study, does not have the implicit purpose of professionalization. Consequently, the idea is to accredit the activity developed with a certificate rather than to award a qualification, given that admission onto the degree courses the activity leads to is subject to some conditions which in this case are not required. Given that new admission pathways to universities for those over 40 and 45 years of age with work or professional experience have been defined since the academic year 2010/2011, the possibility of conferring official academic validity on the academic activity developed under this program is recommended, albeit exceptionally. For this to be allowed, the interested persons must earn the place on the course of study leading to the official qualification by any of the pathways established in the current regulations. Once the place has been awarded, the credits earned on the program can be subject to recognised credit transfer, by following the same application procedure as any other student that has begun a new course of study with previous university studies. The competent academic authority will analyse the academic record and make the corresponding proposal for recognition. The procedures established for the rest of the students will be followed in terms of incorporating the credits into the new academic record and applying the corresponding fees. Given that the admission and enrolment regulations for participants in the UdG's University Education program for the over-50s attached was received favourably by the Academic Committee Validated Credit Transfer Committee in its session 08/09 of 15 October 2009.

IT IS HEREBY AGREED

Single provision.- To approve the admission and enrolment regulations for participants in the UdG's university education program for the over-50s in accordance with the attached appendix.

Admission and enrolment regulations for participants in the UdG’s University Education program for the over-50s

1. Academic structure of the program

The program will be set up as a virtual curriculum that will include the subjects these students can enrol for. It is the director of the program's responsibility to decide what these subjects are, in agreement with the management of the teaching centres. To make it possible to manage the academic records of the participants in the program, the subjects incorporated into it will not be able to be withdrawn from the virtual curriculum without them continuing to be offered.
The program director will notify the Planning and Assessment Office about new subjects incorporated into the program so that the UdG’s academic IT system, which must manage the academic records, can be updated.
Although some education pathways related to the different degrees taught in the Faculties and Schools of the UdG are fixed, the curriculum will not cover them to allow for the possibility of taking subjects assigned to different pathways. The fact that enrolment will include mandatory tutoring ensures that it will be adapted to each student’s needs, making this definition superfluous.

However, so as not to detract from the purpose of the program, and also with respect to the invested resources, it is established that the 240 credits of a degree required to obtain an official degree qualification on an academic record cannot be obtained, and so a limit of 180 credits passed for a 240-credit degree is established. In the case of a 180-credit degree, the limit of the programme is 120 credits.”

2. Access

The purpose of the program means that the usual requirements to be admitted onto degree courses do not have to be considered, and there are no prior academic requirements.
Applicants have to prove the only requirement of being over 50 years old at the start of the academic year they apply for admission onto the program.
They must state in the application that they are aware of article 4 of the Statutes of the University of Girona, which establishes that the preferred institutional language at the University of Girona is Catalan.
Candidates must submit their application to the program director. Previous to being assigned a place, each candidate will be interviewed by the director to determine and assess the candidate's capacity to follow the program and the recommended pathway.
The director of the program will process the admission applications submitted and notify the students and the Academic and Student Administration Service of the outcome, so that the corresponding academic records can be opened.
A favourable resolution, which implies recognising the applicant as a student on the program, will take into account the limit of 180 credits established in point 1, which will be monitored in the corresponding enrolment tutorials.

Students on the program will be taught and evaluated like the rest of the students and can obtain an accrediting academic certificate for the subjects taken. They also enjoy the same rights and services as the rest of the students, except for the rights of representation and participation derived from the status of full-time student.
Certificates can only be issued once the corresponding enrolment fees have been proven to be paid.

3. Enrolment

There will be a special procedure for student enrolment on the program, which will include an initial tutorial with the director of the program, who will transfer the applications of candidates that have attended the tutorial to the Academic and Student Administration service in order for them to be officially registered. Because these students can opt for the same services offered to the rest of the students, the enrolment applications must be subject to these conditions.
The cost of credits are decided and updated annually by the Board of Trustees of the University. The fees for other compulsory items that students on official degree courses must pay must also be applied, except for the fee for enrolment materials because none are specifically produced for this program. The accident insurance is also mandatory for these students.
The fact that the enrolment process includes the mandatory tutorial means that it is unnecessary to establish consequences for non-attendance. If a student drops out of one or more courses and later wishes to resume the program, the tutorial will decide whether or not to accept their application. Students will not be able to enrol for more than 40 credits per academic year. Special cases will be dealt with in the compulsory tutorial without this being stated in the management systems.
Single final provision. In force
The present admission and enrolment regulations for participants in the UdG’s university education program for the over-50s will come into force the day following its approval by the Governing Council of the UdG.
