  • UdG at a Glance

The University of Girona (UdG) has various campuses scattered around the medieval city of Girona, situated in the Spanish autonomous region of Catalonia. UdG is  the country’s pioneering institution of higher tourism education, offering courses in the field since 1989. Today, 50% of the approximately 700 students enrolled in tourism courses are of international origin.

The  Faculty of Tourism, situated at the top of the old quarter, “Barri Vell”, runs two undergraduate programs and three master courses. The European Master in Tourism Management (EMTM), an Erasmus Mundus program, being one of those master’s programs.

  • Faculty of Tourism

The faculty's main aim is teaching quality under the new European Higher Education Area (EHEA) concept introduced in 2008-2009. A long tradition in maintaining relations with foreign educational institutions, which is proving very successful to date, will continue also into the future and represents the possiblity for students to complete part of their course abroad at one of the twenty partner universities of the UdG for Erasmus or Prometeus program.

Furthermore, faculty members are committed to the current environment encouraging idea generation to meet the expectations of students as well as those of the job market, for example by offering classes in new product development.

Research by the faculty is carried out through the Higher Institute of Tourism Studies (INSETUR), focusing on basic and applied research, postgraduate studies and lifelong learning. Consequently, the faculty aims to be a point of reference for tourism research in the country.

  • Awards & Achievements

UdG is one of the first institutions in Spain that offers doctorate programs in tourism of a recognized quality. The PhD in Tourism, Business and Law, was awarded as a program of excellence by the Ministry of Science in 2005.

Also, members of the faculty were granted several co‐operation projects to develop tourism in countries such as Brazil, Ethiopia, Mexico or Peru in the last two years. Other recent international research co‐operation activities involved countries such as Chile, Tunisia, Lebanon, and from Europe including France, Italy and Greece.

  • SDU at a Glance


The University of Southern Denmark (SDU) was established in 1998 through a merging of three institutions specialized in teaching and research at six campuses in the cities of Odense, Kolding, Esbjerg, Sønderborg, Slagelse and Copenhagen.

Every day more than 1,400 researchers and 20,000 students build on the University’s reputation as a center of academic excellence and each year more than 1,500 international students choose to study at the SDU.

The ultimate goal of the SDU is to be the university of choice for students, staff and collaborating partners, at both national and international levels through delivering high-quality courses in an innovative environment.

  • Faculty of Humanities


Tourism studies are taught at the Faculty of Humanities, which also covers a host of subjects from language, literature, history, philosophy, media studies and communication sciences. The wide range of courses offered - some traditional, some innovative and interdisciplinary - all aim to help students gain a better understanding of human thought, creative arts and communication. Students are encouraged to think, argue and evaluate such that they acquire the skills and training necessary in their future careers.

The Faculty of Humanities is the largest at the University of Southern Denmark with more than 640 full and part time staff and more than 5,000 students enrolled. The Faculty has teaching, curriculum development and research activities in the campuses in Odense, Kolding, Sønderborg/Flensborg, Slagelse and Esbjerg.

  • Awards & Achievements


The Center for Tourism Innovation and Culture that forms a part of the SDU has contributed to several national and international research and consultancy projects in sustainable tourism and competence development for tourism practitioners and tourism educators. Staff members at the Center have published numerous research papers, articles and books in the field of tourism education, innovation and sustainable tourism development and has received national awards in areas of innovative e-learning and research dissemination.

The Center has been highly involved with several international multi-disciplinary research and educational teams, including the B.E.S.T. Education Network (the 2005-2010 chair was Dr. Liburd from the Center), which is an international consortium dedicated to sustainable tourism development.

SDU has been highly engaged in European educational cooperation by engaging in multilateral projects such as the Erasmus Program, Thematic Networks, European Master Programs and dual degree programs for several years.

Ljubljana

  • UL at a Glance

University of Ljubljana (UL), situated in the capital of Slovenia, was founded in 1919. The whole university has more than 56,000 undergraduate and post-graduate students, making it one of the biggest universities in the world with continuous growth of international students enrolling in its courses.

Tourism studies are run at the Faculty of Economics (FELU), established in 1946. Nowadays, it is the largest faculty of the UL with almost 10,000 full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate students occupying the modern campus close to the city center.

  • Faculty of Economics


The Faculty of Economics has important links to the corporate world and a high commitment to research, teaching quality standards and market orientation. The FELU, together with its degree and postgraduate programs in business and economics, is the pioneer of tourism higher education in Slovenia and one of the faculty aims is to rank among the best business and economic schools in the world by 2020 focusing on its core values: excellence, international orientation, client focus, and openness to collaboration, innovation, ethics and social responsibility including environmental awareness.

  • Awards & Important Achievements


The FELU has been awarded accreditation by both the AACSB (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) and EQUIS (the European Quality Improvement System), making it among 88 business schools in the world to hold both of them. The prestigious AACSB accreditation has been awarded to only 65 business schools in Europe, the FELU being the first school in Central and Eastern Europe. This establishes the faculty among the world’s best business schools with the highest academic quality.

In addition, tourism programs have received a TEDQUAL quality certificate, awarded by the UN WTO and THEMIS Foundation for quality tourism education (since 2002). International accreditations confirm excellence in all activities and thus ensure high quality of graduate programs at the FELU.

As for international co-operation, the Faculty of Economics is an active participant in international research projects and is running several joint higher education programs in the fields of tourism, business and environmental management.

  • ITHAS

 
International Travel and Hospitality Academy at Sea (ITHAS) is an educational program with international participation. EMTM students participate in ITHAS (usually organized in early May) during their second semester at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia.

Participants attend lectures given by tourism professionals from around the globe while sailing along the beautiful Adriatic coast for approximately one week.  Each year, courses are focused on a different issue from the tourism industry such as “Physical Coastal Planning in Tourism” (2011) and “Creation of Tourism Product” (2012).

ITHAS is organized by the University of Zagreb (Faculty of Economics and Business) in collaboration with other partners from Germany, Finland, Canada, and Slovenia. For more information, please, visit the official ITHAS web site: http://ithas.org/index.html.
