El primer cop que en Ryan va sentir a parlar de l'Àfrica va ser en una classe quan tant sols tenia 6 anys. La mestra els va explicar la difícil realitat de la infància a l'Àfrica. Alguns nens i nenes, els va dir la mestra, fins i tot moren de set.
En Ryan es va indignar; a ell no li costava gaire anar fins a l'aixeta i deixar rajar tanta aigua com volgués!
Llavors, en Ryan va preguntar a la mestra quant costaria dur aigua a tots aquells nens i nenes. La mestra, perplexa, va rumiar una mica fins recordar l'organització WaterCan, dedicada justament a aquest tema. WaterCan perfora pous a l'Àfrica per uns 70 dòlars.
Quan en Ryan va arribar a casa va anar corrent a demanar 70 dòlars a la seva mare Susan. Voliar comprar un pou pels nens africans. La seva mare va respondre que havia de guanyar-se'ls ell sol. Van establir, doncs, que en Ryan hauria de col·laborar en les tasques domèstiques a canvi d'una paga setmanal.
En poques setmanes va reunir els diners i va demanar a Susan que l'acompanyés a WaterCan per comprar el pou. Un cop a la seu de l'organització, Ryan i Susan van assabentar-se que perforar un pou costa realment 2000 dòlars; ni rentant tots els vidres del món en Ryan arribaria a aquella xifra. En Ryan, però, no es va enfonsar; va prometre que tornaria amb tots els diners.
I així va ser. Seguits pel seu entusiasme, germans, veïs i amics d'en Ryan van començar a moure's per aconseguir la xifra.
Durant el gener de 1999 es va construir un pou en un poblet del nord d'Uganda. Des de llavors, en Ryan no ha deixat de buscar fons i suport arreu del món.
Els nens de l'escola d'en Ryan van començar a enviar-se cartes amb els nens i nenes de la localitat on s'havia construït el pou. D'aquesta forma en Ryan va conèixer Akana, un noi que havia fugit d'un exèrcit de menors i que ara lluitava per anar a escola. En Ryan va voler anar a veure'l.
L'any 2000 en Ryan va arribar al poble i tots els nens i nenes de la zona van rebre'l per agraïr el seu esforç. En Ryan, sorprès per la rebuda, va preguntar a la guia:
- Saben el meu nom?.
- Tothom en 100 kilòmetres a la rodona el sap.- Va rebre per resposta.
Avui en dia, amb 18 anys, en Ryan té la seva pròpia fundació i ha construït més de 400 pous a l'Àfrica. Proporciona, a més, educació als infants de les zones i d'ensenyar a les comunitats a tenir cura dels pous.
En Ryan vol ser ingenier hidràulic. Vol acabar amb la set a l'Àfrica. Potser tots podríem fer una reflexió similar.
