Brief CV

Professor of Cell Biology and researcher from the Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology group at the University of Girona (UdG). Her research career begins with a doctorate carried out at the Institut de Recerca Oncològica in Barcelona. It continues with post-doctoral stays at the Vall Hebron Hospital and UdG, where she contributes with her experience in cell cultures, transfection, transduction, PCR, Western Blot and ELISA techniques. Currently, her main line of research is focused on the effects of treatments that enhance neural plasticity in memory and learning areas and the analysis of non-invasive biomarkers in neurological diseases. Since 2007, she has collaborated with Dr Pilar Segura, who coordinates a leading research group in the field of improvement and recovery of learning and memory in normal and brain damaged rats by intracranial electrical stimulation (ICSS). As a result of this collaboration, she has published international articles, participated in projects PSI2017-83202-C2-2-P and PID2020-117101RB-C22 as leading investigator and co-directed 3 thesis (one currently ongoing). Between 2009 and 2011, she completed 2 research placements in the Neuromodulation & Experimental Neurosurgery group from Maastricht University, European leaders in the study of deep brain stimulation (DBS) applied to the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and depression. This collaboration generated 4 publications and 2 contracts between universities.Since 2014, she has also been collaborating with the Cerebrovascular Research Group at the Girona Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBGI) on blood-brain barrier protective treatments. Specifically, she contributes with her experience in cell culture and molecular studies, participating in the direction of a doctoral thesis, 5 publications, 1 book chapter and 11 congress communications. She is currently an advisor to a clinical and pre-clinical study on circulating miRNAs as predictive biomarkers in patients with carotid stenosis. She has also participated in a multidisciplinary and multicenter study in collaboration with the Institut de Recerca i Tecnologia Agroalimentària IRTA-Monells and the ORDESA company. This research aims to analyze the expression of neuronal plasticity related proteins in the hippocampus of pigs fed with different supplemented diets. The results showing the ability to reverse the negative effects of a hypercaloric diet through dietary supplements in a pig model, have been recently publicated in the European Journal of Nutrition. She recently initiated a collaboration with the Brain, Cognition, and Behaviour Research group of the Consorci Sanitari de Terrasa, leaded by Dr Maite Galonera. She is leading investigator of the TED2021-130409B-C53 project. This project analyzes the changes in the expression of status cognitive related miRNAs in plasma from long-term COVID19 patients treated with a digitalized rehabilitating cognitive program. For this purpose, a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, physicians, biologists, physicists, optometrists and software engineers belonging to the CST, Universitat de Barcelona, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya and UdG is participating in the project. A first scientific communication has been presented identifing two candidate miRNAs related to the post-COVID19 condition with cognitive impairment.
