Eduard
Carbonell studied Philosophy and Arts at the University of Barcelona
and at the Complutense University of Madrid. He has also extended his
studies in Italy. He holds a Doctorate in History of Art from the
University of Barcelona and was a lecturer at the Autonomous University
of Barcelona from 1972 to 1988. Since 1987 he has been Professor in
History of Mediaeval Art of the Autonomous University of Barcelona and
since 1997 he has been Professor of History of Art (Heritage and
Museology) of the University of Girona. He has published several
articles in Spanish and foreign journals focusing on Mediaeval Art,
Cultural Heritage and Museums. He has taken part in courses on Cultural
Heritage and Museums in several Spanish universities as well as in
Spanish and European museums. In his capacity as General Director of
Cultural Heritage of the Generalitat of Catalonia (1988-1994) he
participated in the drawing up of several legal provisions, such as Law
17/1990, of 2nd November, on Museums; Law 4/1993, of 18th March, on the
Library System of Catalonia; or Law 9/1993, of 30th September, on
Catalan Cultural Heritage. He was the General Director of the National
Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC) from October 1994 to December 2005,
where he oversaw the process of the initial installation of the museum
(Romanesque Art, 1995; Gothic Art, 1997) right up to its full opening
(from the Renaissance to the Avant-Garde movements of the 20th century)
in December 2004. He is a researcher of the Catalan Institute for
Research into Cultural Heritage and since 2006 has directed the
Official Master’s Degree in Heritage Management in the Local
Environment.
