Educational objectives
- To provide practical training for specialists in chromatographic and analytical techniques currently employed in the majority of industries and analytical laboratories.
- To provide students with knowledge about recent tendencies in chromatographic techniques and introduce them to research in this field.
- To give specialists knowledge of and train them in how to use mass spectrometry and apply it in various scientific and technological areas.
Curriculum structure
The Masters in Chromatographic Techniques consists of 60 ECTS credits and is organised in two tracks, professional and research. The modules are grouped in two blocks. The first block consists of 30 credits, is compulsory for the two modules and includes specific training in chromatographic techniques, treatment of samples and laboratory quality assurance. The second block is differentiated by the two tracks and includes a 30 credit internship for the professional one and a 30 credit research paper for the research track.
The internship (professional track) is done in collaborating companies that have the instrumentation necessary to work in appropriate conditions.
The research paper (research track) can be done in the three organising universities, or in any other university that regularly collaborates with them or in European universities that have bilateral agreements with them, through the Erasmus programme.
Career opportunities
The professional opportunities are many and varied because chromatography is found in more and more analytical and also biomedical laboratories. Specialists are mainly in demand in food, pharmaceutical, veterinary, petrochemical and chemical industries. In addition, we must mention the health, environmental and forensic control laboratories, and many research laboratories, including those that are analytical as well as those that provide support to chemistry, biochemistry and medicine research groups, etc. The training acquired during the masters programme allows students to accept high levels of responsibility in any of the areas mentioned.
Admission profile, previous education requirements and admission and selection criteria
The programme was designed for degree holders who want to specialise in chromatographic techniques to work in one of the previously mentioned companies or laboratories or to develop their doctoral theses in this field. This is the only masters of its kind in Spain. Students must be predisposed to completing part of their studies at another university since this is a joint masters in which mobility is essential.

Pre-registration and registration
Pre-registration must be completed online.
First pre-registration period: will begin on 2 April and will run until 1 July 2007
Admission decisions: between 16 and 18 July 2007
If places are still available, a new pre-registration period will be open from 20 July until 19 September 2007.

Admission to the Doctoral programme
Students can apply for admission to the doctoral course of any Official Postgraduate Programme (POP, Programes Oficials de Postgrau) at the University of Girona provided they have completed a minimum of 60 ECTS credits in a POP programme or have an official master’s degree and have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits in their undergraduate and postgraduate studies at a university or other centre of higher education. The applications will be reviewed by the Doctoral Council of each programme.
