Subsidised (to give a general idea of what this means, for the 2006-2007 academic year the price has been set at 24-28 € per ECTS credit; in anticipation of approval of a Government of Catalonia decree, expected by June 2007, an approximate increase of between 5% and 7% can be calculated for the 2007-2008 academic year). |

Educational objectives
The objective of this masters is to train specialists in the field of medicinal chemistry and molecular design. Knowledge is provided about design, synthesis and study methods of the molecular basis of the activity of bioactive compounds. The research track is focused on techniques used to develop molecules of biological interest.
The professional track is dedicated to the managerial and productive aspects of biotechnology companies.

Curriculum structure
- The masters in Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Design consists of 120 ECTS credits spread over four semesters. It consists of three compulsory modules: initial training in the first semester, basic training in the second semester, and instrumental training between the second and third semesters; two optional advanced training modules characterised by track —professional or research— in the third semester; and a compulsory module of practical training carried out in a company or in a research group during the fourth and final semester.
- The professional track is aimed at students who want to work in laboratories or industries dedicated to the development and the use of bioactive compounds. The students will complete internships in companies to know how they function.
- In the research track students will carry out their work in the laboratories of the research groups of the Department of Chemistry or the Institute of Computational Chemistry of the UdG, located at the Faculty of Science and at the Science and Technology Park.
- In the instrumental module cross-disciplinary skills, both generic ones aimed at all the students in masters programmes at the UdG and those specific to the area of the masters programme, will be developed.

Career opportunities
The graduates of this masters programme will acquire training in the field of medicinal chemistry and molecular design which will allow them to pursue research careers in universities and research centres or to work in industries developing and using bioactive compounds.

Admission profile, previous education requirements and admission and selection criteria
This masters programme, with its dual introduction to research and professional focus, is interesting for research centres (universities, CSIC - the Spanish National Research Council, research institutes) and for industry.
Admission requirements:
Students who have 3 or 4-5 year degrees (or enough completed credits for an equivalent degree) in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Food Science and Technology, Agri-food Science, Biology, Chemical Engineering and Environmental Sciences can enrol in the MECHMOD. Students with other scientific degrees (for example, Mathematics, Medicine and Veterinary) can be admitted if they agree to adapt their training under the supervision of the coordinating committee of the masters.
The admission and selection criteria will be the same regardless of the nationality of the applicants. Knowledge of English is also required for access to this masters programme. Knowledge of English can be demonstrated with an intermediate-level certificate or based on an interview or test in the Modern Languages Service.
