Educational objectives
This Masters aims to prepare students to become experts in one of the following three aspects related with the environment: biological diversity and its conservation; understanding, planning and management of land, especially periurban, rural-urban and free areas, in the broadest sense; and phenomena related with air and water environments, in natural areas and in situations in which these resources are used, managed and profited from.
We can highlight the following specific aims:
- To acquire basic knowledge to analyse current environmental issues.
- To acquire the skills and abilities needed to provide an answer to the aforementioned issues.
- To introduce students in professional practice in the different areas of the environment.
Curriculum structure
The programme is organised in two phases. The first provides instruction related to two groups of skills: a first group with 15 ECTS credits containing advanced generic training in the area and providing the skills to uncover and transfer the knowledge considered necessary for anyone holding a masters degree; and a second one with 30 ECTS credits containing the advanced training specific to the Masters in the Environment. The second phase, with 15 ECTS credits, corresponds to a research practicum or supervised internship in a company or in public administration (to choose).
This structure can be spread over three specialisations or tracks: Environmental Biology, Geography in Town and Country Planning and Environmental Management, Environmental Physics and Technology. Students can choose subjects to have access to multidisciplinary training if they want it.

While priority will be given to students with better academic records, consideration is also given to the following criteria: if they receive a grant as part of a research group at the University of Girona; if they can demonstrate knowledge of foreign languages (especially a sufficient level of English to be able to follow the instruction, part of which may be given in that language); and finally if they have other merits such as previous research experience or professional experience in the environmental field. Also taken into consideration will be that the final objective is the elaboration and defence of a doctoral thesis at the University of Girona.
