Educational objectives


The Masters in Material and Structural Mechanics is aimed at students who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in the field of the mechanical behaviour of materials and structures. Its objective is to link the current knowledge of theories of the behaviour of materials with the most innovative techniques in structural engineering. The proposed syllabus places special emphasis on computational techniques, materials mechanics, advanced structural design and experimental techniques. The masters provides students with the skills to understand the aims of the disciplines involved and with the capacity to design solutions to advanced problems in this field.

Curriculum structure


The masters offers two specific tracks or specialisations: 1) Advanced material design and simulation and 2) Advanced structural analysis.
The two specialisations can be justified by the fields of expertise of the professors involved, included in their research activity or professional practice, and by the demand associated with needs in the industrial sector and in the consulting and engineering fields.

The syllabus is divided in two semesters. The basic module (M1, 30 ECTS credits) is taught in the first semester. Instruction in the second semester will be based on the specialisation modules (M2-A “Advanced material design and simulation” and M2-B “Advanced structural analysis”) and on the practicum module (M3, 18 ECTS credits “Practicum module”), in which students develop research work or complete internships in companies or institutions.

Students may choose 12 ECTS credits of elective subjects from among those of the chosen track.

Admission profile, previous education requirements and admission and selection criteria


The Masters is intended for engineers, architects and degree holders who can demonstrate adequate training in disciplines encompassing materials and structures.

In that respect, we are thinking of students with previous studies in architecture, architecture technology, industrial engineering, civil engineering, materials engineering, technical engineering in the same branches, physics or other fields with equivalent training in the fields indicated.

Admission requirements:
Current official degrees:

  • Degree in Architecture
  • Degree in Industrial Engineering or Materials Engineering
  • Degree in Physics
  • Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Diploma in Industrial Engineering
  • Diploma in Architecture


Other admission requirements:

Mechanic engineering, civil engineering or other degrees that include training which is similar to that indicated previously.

In some exceptional cases, students without the corresponding degrees can be admitted. By resolution of the rector and with a binding report presented previously by the Masters Committee.

In exceptional cases, and as long as the maximum number of students admitted is greater than the number of applicants, the Masters Committee will consider admitting, under certain conditions, those students who do not meet the admission requirements but are expected to be able to complete them by the time they begin their studies.

Pre-registration and registration


Pre-registration must be completed online.

First pre-registration period: will begin on 2 April and will run until 1 July 2007.

Admission decisions: on 18 July 2007.

First registration period: from 20 until 30 July 2007.

If places are still available, a new pre-registration period will be open from 20 July until 19 September 2007.

Admission to the Doctoral programme


Students can apply for admission to the doctoral course of any Official Postgraduate Programme (POP, Programes Oficials de Postgrau) at the University of Girona provided they have completed a minimum of 60 ECTS credits in a POP programme or have an official master’s degree and have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits in their undergraduate and postgraduate studies at a university or other centre of higher education. The applications will be reviewed by the Doctoral Council of each programme.
