The Choir of the University of Girona was founded in 1998. During this as yet short but intense life it has continually striven to be a useful cultural and artistic tool for the university community. Through the choir it is possible for students, academic staff and administrative and service personnel to participate in a musical activity which is growing stronger and improving its level day by day.
The Choir participates in acts sponsored by the University and the City of Girona. Examples of these are the university academic year inaugural concerts, ceremonial acts, exchanges with other university choirs, Christmas concerts, concerts coinciding with the Temps de Flors floral exhibits, participation in the International Festival of Word Religious Music, concerts in the Auditorium-Congress Hall, etc.
The Choir’s powerful performances are the result of three hour weekly rehearsals, where chosen repertories and vocal technique are worked on.
Important changes, introduced as the choir has developed and maintained with more energy year after year, include:
- The incorporation of a pianist to accompany the choir during rehearsals and concerts
- The advice of a singing teacher and a vocal technique teacher
- Rehearsals by voices
- Additional afternoon and evening rehearsals
- Exchanges and trips with other university choirs
In May 2003 the first CD of songs interpreted entirely by the University of Girona Choir was recorded and serves as a faithful representation of its first five years of work.
Rehearsals are held on Fridays from 12:30 to 14:30 in room 35 of the Faculty of Education and Psychology (Emili Grahit) and every other week on Wednesdays from 18:30 to 20:00 in the assembly hall.
During the 2007-08 academic year we are celebrating our tenth anniversary with a special concert at the symphony hall of the Auditorium-Congress Hall of Girona.
The Director of the Choir since its inception has been Joan de la Creu Godoy i Tomàs.
