Frequently Asked Questions

Hours and Service

Who can use the library?

All members of the university community (students, instructors, administrative staff and service personnel) as well as previously authorized extra-university members or remote users.

Remember that as a library member you can use all the libraries at UG, regardless of the School or College in which you study.

What are the library´s hours?

You can view the library´s schedule under the General Information heading on our website. There you will be sure to find the most current information. At certain points throughout the semester (Easter, Summer, Christmas) flyers will be posted at all library branches to inform users of special hours for these periods.

Is there any library open on weekends and at night?

Both Campus Libraries (Barri Vell and Montilivi) are open Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Emili Grahit is open Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and during exam periods will remain open until 9 p.m.

The Montilivi Library is open from December 1st to June 30th, Monday through Friday till 3 a.m.

Where is the Library located? How do I get there?

Please view the Map of UG Campuses within the City of Girona.

Are there other libraries in Girona?

Girona has five public libraries. You can find their locations and hours under the heading Girona Municipal Libaries. On that webpage, you will also find a link to the Directory of Libraries within Catalonia, where you can search for information about any public Catalan library.

There also are Professional College Libraries with branches in Girona, specialized in specific fields.

Yesterday I forgot my glasses! Did anyone find them?

Any lost object that is found within the library will be available at the Check-out Desk. Remember that lockers are provided at the entrance of each library so that you can leave your bags safely. To use the lockers, please ask the Information Desk for a key.

I´m not a member of the library, but I would like to be. What do I need to do?

Entrance is the library is open to the public free of charge, as are the searches within the library collections. If you would like to check out an item to take home with you, or if you would like to use Internet at the library, you must first register yourself. The staff at any Check-out Desk will be happy to help you.

Do you offer elective credits through the library?

Yes, we hold training sessions (workshops) for which you may receive one credit. For information about dates and registration, please go to the website Library Instruction.

If you would like to learn more about how to use the library, or if you would like a tour of the facilities, please come to any Information Desk. We will be happy to show you around!

I´m looking for someone who works at the library, but I only know this person´s last name. How can I find him or her?

You can search for a library employee in the Directory of Library Staff, which you can find under the heading Locations and Hours.

Computer Use and Internet Connectivity

What do I need to do in order to use the computers at the library?

Log in with your user name and password (the same ones you use at Campus Computer Lab or other offices at your School or College).

What programs are available?

All libraries have some computers reserved exclusively for consulting the Library Catalog, and the use of these computers is unrestricted. The rest of the computers have regular office programs and free access to the Internet. Since you will have logged in as an authorized UG member, you will also have access to the library intranet (full-text electronic books and journals, databases, newspapers on-line, etc.)

How can I save my library searches or other work done on a library computer?

All the computers have external drives with which you can save to your own personal digital storage device (disks, USB-PEN drive, etc.). If you do not have any removable memory with you, you can send the necessary information to your personal e-mail account.

What are the restrictions for computer use at the UG library?

The following are prohibited: Changing computer configurations, chats, viewing of pornography or any other illegal content on-line.

Can I connect to the Internet on my laptop (notebook)?

Yes, with WIFI (Wireless Internet). Go to our Web Support page to view system requirements.

Do I need a special user name or password in order to connect to the WIFI?

No, you do not need any special code. Once your computer´s wireless connector “detects” the library´s wireless signal, the system will invite you to log in with your UG user name and password (the same ones that you use to log in to the computers at any Campus Lab or Library).

At any rate, sometimes the problem occurs before log-in: the wireless connector “can´t find” the signal. In that case, you can go to our Web Support page for help. If you still have trouble, you should go to one of the Campus Technology Rooms at your School or College and ask for help there.

Can I connect to the WIFI with a Mac?

In theory, there should not be any problem, since the type of computer does not affect the connectivity and the communication protocol for Macs is the same as that for PCs. If you are having problems, most likely the problem is with the network configurations or the wireless internet card, not with the computer itself. You can go to our Web Support page for help.   If you still have trouble, you should go to one of the Campus Technology Rooms at your School or College and ask for help there.

Can I access the Digital Library resources (journals, books, databases) from home?

Yes, through Private Virtual Network Services (Servei de Xarxes Privades Virtuals, o VPN). This service grants access to UG members who are off-campus. In order to use this service, you must perform a minimal configuration on your computer. Please see the instructions at: http://biblioteca.udg.edu/serveis/vpn.asp.

Photocopying and Printing

I want to make photocopies. What should I do?

All the libraries have self-service photocopy machines. They accept coins or the print/copy cards that you can obtain at the Photocopy Services at your School or College. The photocopy machines at the Barri Vell Library only take coins.

Will my print/copy card work at any library?

Yes. The cards from Montilivi work at Emili Grahit and vice versa. At Barri Vell, the photocopy machines do not accept cards, only coins.

How much does each copy cost?

.04 cents.

Can I make photocopies in color or in other formats (A3, A2, etc.)?

No. These services are only provided by the School and College Photocopy Services. You will have to borrow the item and bring it there.

Can I take out a closed-stack item or a journal to make photocopies outside the library?

No, closed-stack items and journals do not leave the library premises for any reason.

Can I print from the library computers? Where do I pick them up?

Yes. This service is available at all libraries. The printed pages can be collected at the School or Campus Photocopy Services (Emili Grahit and Barri Vell) or at the Library Photocopy Services (Montilivi). Remember that you should create a new folder in My Documents and save the document under your name or username, so that it is easily identifiable when you go to collect it.

The networked printing services are temporarily unavailable at the Barri Vell Library.

What other document reproduction systems does the library have?

All the libraries have microfilm-microfiche readers and recorders, CD / DVD recorders and scanners. Please ask for more information at the Check-Out Desk.

I am a student and my professor has recommended a book that the library doesn´t have. What can I do?

You can request that the library purchase this item by filling out this form. We will inform the professor that the item is not currently unavailable but has been ordered and will be available soon.

I would like to request the purchase of an item.

You must fill out this form. The library will consider your request and inform you by email of its decision and reasoning.

How can I learn which items the library has recently acquired?

By checking the list of New Acquisitions that you can view under the heading “The Latest at the Library.”

Borrowing

I am a student. How can I borrow a book?

Your UG Student ID authorizes you as a library member with borrowing privileges. If you do not have this ID card yet, or you do not have it with you, you must present another form of identification (DNI, passport, etc.)

I am a student. How many items can I borrow at a time?

Five items, regardless of which type. For example, 2 DVDs and 3 books. Remember that if the item is not requested by someone else, you can renew it (by telephone, by email, or in person at the library).

I checked out a DVF from the Barri Vell Library. Can I return it to the Montilivi Library?

Yes. You can return, reserve and renew items at any library location regardless of where they are shelved.

The catalog shows that the book is available for check-out, but I can´t find it.

It could be that the book is reserved, that someone is using it at the moment within the library, that it is currently in circulation waiting to be shelved… Ask the library personnel, and someone will help you find it.

Can I renew that books that I have checked out without going to the library?

Yes, you can do so by telephone or by email. You can look for the appropriate telephone numbers and email address by clicking here. Remember to renew the items before the due date so that you will be able to return it on time without being fined, in the event that someone else has requested the item. (In this case, the item is not renewable.)

We can request this book from another library through our Item Request Services. This is a paid service that charges fees (except for the university community of the College of Education and the College of Letters, for whose members the service is free). You can go to the Information Desk at any library for more details.
